From the Classroom to Europe: How Guild 1 Mapped the Way of Saint James in eTwinning Is it possible to connect places as distant as Transylvania, cities in Germany, or spots in Italy to the Cathedral of Santiago through an interactive map? In our class, we not only believe so—we made it happen through our European eTwinning project! In this international adventure, our students were organized into specialized teams, and today we want to highlight the fantastic role played by the members of Guild 1: The Mapmakers . The Cultural Legacy of Pilgrimage in Italy When we think about pilgrimage, we often imagine people walking towards Rome or Santiago de Compostela. However, pilgrims did much more than travel from one place to another. As they crossed Europe, they exchanged ideas, traditions, artistic styles and even recipes. For centuries, the Via Francigena, the ancient road connecting Canterbury to Rome, played a key role in this cultural exchange. Thousands of travellers from different countries crossed northern and central Italy, leaving a rich legacy that is still visible today. Art and Architecture Along the Way The Via Francigena encouraged the construction of churches, abbeys, bridges, hospitals and shelters where pilgrims could rest safely. Guild 5: Hospitalers – Caring for Pilgrims on the Way of Saint James The Hospitalers Guild is responsible for promoting the health, safety and well-being of pilgrims on the Way of Saint James . Inspired by the traditional hospitalers who have welcomed and assisted pilgrims for centuries, this guild combines research, technology and teamwork to create practical resources that help pilgrims prepare for and complete their journey safely. By working in international teams, students transform scientific information into useful guides, visual materials and digital tools. Our project, The Way of Saint James and European Values Our e-Twinning project is inspired by the Way of Saint James because it represents one of Europe's greatest examples of cultural exchange. For more than a thousand years, people from different regions have travelled along its routes, sharing languages, traditions, knowledge, and experiences. Today, students from different European countries continue this tradition in a new way by collaborating, learning from one another, and discovering their common heritage. The Way was the first route to receive recognition as a European Cultural Route, highlighting its importance as a symbol of a shared European identity. Just like the Way connects cities, regions, and countries, our project connects schools and students, creating opportunities to work together beyond national borders.
