5: Hospitalers – Caring for Pilgrims on the Way of Saint James
The Hospitalers Guild is responsible for
promoting the health, safety and well-being of pilgrims on the Way of Saint
James. Inspired by the traditional hospitalers who have welcomed and
assisted pilgrims for centuries, this guild combines research, technology and
teamwork to create practical resources that help pilgrims prepare for and
complete their journey safely. By working in international teams, students
transform scientific information into useful guides, visual materials and
digital tools.

The Role of the
Hospitalers on the Way of Saint James
For centuries, hospitalers have played an essential
role on the Way of Saint James by welcoming, guiding and supporting
pilgrims throughout their journey. Although their responsibilities have evolved
over time, their main objective remains the same: to help pilgrims complete the
route safely and comfortably.
Today, hospitalers provide much more than
accommodation. They offer practical advice about hydration, nutrition, foot
care, injury prevention and daily planning. Simple recommendations, such as
drinking enough water, choosing balanced meals and wearing appropriate
footwear, can make a significant difference during a long-distance walk.
One of the most common challenges faced by pilgrims is
the appearance of blisters. For this reason, learning how to prevent and treat
them correctly is an important part of preparing for the journey. Likewise,
following a progressive walking plan before starting the pilgrimage helps
improve physical fitness, reduces the risk of injury and allows pilgrims to
enjoy the experience with greater confidence.
Modern hospitalers also make use of digital
technology to improve the support they provide. Infographics, QR codes,
stretching videos and online guides make health information more accessible and
easier to understand. These resources allow pilgrims to learn at their own pace
and access reliable advice whenever they need it.
Ultimately, the work of the hospitalers reflects the
spirit of the Way of Saint James: hospitality, solidarity and care for
others. By combining traditional values with scientific knowledge and modern
technology, they help ensure that every pilgrim can experience the journey in a
safe, healthy and meaningful way.
