From the Classroom to Europe: How Guild 1 Mapped the Way of Saint James in eTwinning

Is it possible to connect places as distant as Transylvania, cities in Germany, or spots in Italy to the Cathedral of Santiago through an interactive map? In our class, we not only believe so—we made it happen through our European eTwinning project!

In this international adventure, our students were organized into specialized teams, and today we want to highlight the fantastic role played by the members of Guild 1: The Mapmakers.

The Mission: The "Eyes" of the Interactive Map

The students in Guild 1 took on the challenge of registering, locating, and visually enriching key stops along the network of routes crossing Europe bound for Galicia.

Through our interactive Genially map, they located photos, key facts, videos, and historical insights from essential stops such as:

  • European origins and stages: From Transylvania, passing through key cities like Görlitz and Walsrode (Germany), Turin and Genoa (Italy), or Le Puy-en-Velay (France).
  • Entry points and Iberian routes: The crossing at Roncesvalles, connecting with major landmarks along the French and Northern Ways like Burgos, León, or Oviedo, all the way to Santiago de Compostela.

It wasn't just about placing a pin on a map; it required meticulous documentation: linking images, verifying coordinates, and curating interactive content so peers from other European schools could explore the route.

Digital Skills and Teamwork

Through this cartographic work, Guild 1 put key skills into practice:

  1. Digital Competence: Mastering interactive platforms like Genially, editing photos, and organizing multimedia links.
  2. Geography and Mathematics: Working with European maps, interpreting scales, measuring distances, and mapping coordinates.
  3. Cultural Awareness: Discovering the Way of Saint James as a true historical and cultural backbone connecting all of Europe.

For their sustained effort, rigor, and teamwork, the work done by Guild 1 accounted for 6% of the final grade in each term.

  THE MOST CREATIVE PART OF ETWINNING Elena Orejudo González Jefa departamento de dibujo IES Neil Armstrong, Valdemoro The junior students in the 1st EPVA class with teacher Elena, have truly embraced their most creative side. They have captured photographs that depict help and solidarity, as well as creative images of footprints. Additionally, they have designed  indicative arrows adorned with motivational phrases for all those who embark on the Camino de Santiago The students have also creatively decorated the shell of the Camino de Santiago, filling it with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. They narrated a comic strip, set within a medieval castle, telling a story that unfolded one day on the Camino de Santiago. And finally, after studyng medieval art styles in their art history lessons, they created a a stained glass window, technically drew a star polygon from an octagon and coloring with markers  in a myriad of hues.

  Guild 8: Building East–West Bridges Through Shared Pilgrimage Experiences Guild 8, dedicated to the theme “Building East–West Bridges,” explored the common elements that unite pilgrimage traditions across different cultures and religions. During the group discussions, participants reflected on the pilgrimage experience and confirmed that, despite the diversity of destinations and faith traditions, pilgrimages share remarkable similarities. Whether the journey leads to Santiago de Compostela, Jerusalem, or Mecca, pilgrims undergo comparable stages of preparation, experience similar emotions along the way, and follow a journey that unfolds in much the same manner. The group highlighted how anticipation, personal reflection, physical and spiritual challenges, encounters with fellow pilgrims, and the sense of transformation upon reaching the destination are universal aspects of the pilgrimage experience.
