Camino de Santiago 360°: Merging Crafting with Virtual Reality!

Hello eTwinners!

We are thrilled to share an incredible update from our latest project adventure. As part of our ongoing research into digital and technological resources, our students have taken a massive leap forward. We didn’t just want to read about the historic Camino de Santiago—we wanted to walk it in 360 degrees.

And guess what? We built our own gateways to virtual reality to do just that!

Step 1: Building Our Own Google Cardboard

To support our digital learning materials without needing expensive tech, we decided to get hands-on. Using recycled cardboard, lenses, and a lot of teamwork, our students manufactured their very own Google Cardboard VR headsets.

It was the perfect blend of:

STEM skills: Measuring, cutting, and understanding focal lengths.

Sustainability: Giving a second life to everyday materials.

Step 2: Stepping into Camino de Santiago 360

Once our headsets were ready, we fired up the Camino de Santiago 360 app. Slipping our smartphones into our custom cardboard glasses completely changed the game.

Suddenly, we weren't just looking at screens; we were standing inside the majestic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and walking the foggy paths of Galicia. It allowed us to gather deep, contextual information about the route's history, architecture, and cultural significance in a fully immersive way.

Step 3: The Science of Seeing (Stereoscopic Video Investigation)

We didn't stop at just consuming content—we wanted to understand how it works. Our students launched an investigation into stereoscopic vision (how our brains combine two slightly different images to perceive 3D depth).

Our Next Challenge: We are currently researching how to record and edit our own stereoscopic videos. By understanding dual-lens perspective, our goal is to create our own mini-VR clips to share with our partner schools!

Why This Matters for eTwinning

This activity perfectly embodies what eTwinning is all about:

1.     Innovation: Using affordable, accessible VR to enhance digital literacy.

2.     Collaboration: Sharing our DIY designs and findings with our international partners.

3.     Inclusion: Ensuring every student can experience VR technology regardless of budget.
