The Way of Saint James Mosaic Project: A Journey in Tesserae


Since January 2026, every Tuesday from 13:25 to 14:20, the 4th ESO students at IES la Serna have been engaged in a remarkable artistic endeavor as part of the eTwinning project "The Way of Saint James: A European Journey of self-discovery." The students are creating a monumental mosaic that represents the union of European cultures along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

Step 1: The Foundation
The first step in this ambitious project was acquiring the base for the artwork: a substantial wooden board measuring 220cm wide by 120cm high. This board serves as the sturdy canvas for the mosaic.


Step 2: The Design Phase
A dedicated group of 8-10 students took charge of the design process on tracing paper. The composition beautifully reflects the European spirit of the project:
• European Representation: The four corners feature the names of France, Italy, Romania, and Germania, while Spain takes a central position, with their flags represented using glazed, colored tesserae.
• Guiding Arrows: Yellow or blue arrows extend from the flags' positions towards the center, representing the routes of the Camino.
• The Heart of the Mosaic: The majestic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is situated in the center, surrounded by twelve golden stars, symbolizing the unity of the European Union.
• The Inscription: A black tesserae frame bears the inscription "THE WAY OF SAINT JAMES" along the top and "SANCTI IACOBI VIA" in Latin along the bottom.


Step 3: Preparation of Materials
Another group of 8-10 students prepared the materials and tools required for the project. Their tasks included:
• Organizing Tesserae: Sorting the small glass and ceramic tiles by color and size, storing them in boxes.
• Preparing Tools: Gathering essential equipment such as tile nippers for cutting tesserae, brushes for adhesive application, and the necessary glues.



Step 4: Documentation
A smaller group of up to 5 students was responsible for capturing the process. They took photographs of each step and recorded videos with their mobile phones, documenting the mosaic's creation.




The Current Status: An Unfinished Masterpiece
As of June 15th, the mosaic remains unfinished. The creative process has been dynamic, with students constantly refining and rectifying their work from previous sessions. Delays have also occurred, as many of the student designers and artisans have been involved in extracurricular activities throughout the semester.

A Future Showcase
Once completed, the mosaic is destined for a prominent place in the IES la Serna hallway. Families have already been given a preview of the project through the initial sketch and design, building anticipation for the final, stunning piece.

  THE MOST CREATIVE PART OF ETWINNING Elena Orejudo González Jefa departamento de dibujo IES Neil Armstrong, Valdemoro The junior students in the 1st EPVA class with teacher Elena, have truly embraced their most creative side. They have captured photographs that depict help and solidarity, as well as creative images of footprints. Additionally, they have designed  indicative arrows adorned with motivational phrases for all those who embark on the Camino de Santiago The students have also creatively decorated the shell of the Camino de Santiago, filling it with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. They narrated a comic strip, set within a medieval castle, telling a story that unfolded one day on the Camino de Santiago. And finally, after studyng medieval art styles in their art history lessons, they created a a stained glass window, technically drew a star polygon from an octagon and coloring with markers  in a myriad of hues.

  Guild 8: Building East–West Bridges Through Shared Pilgrimage Experiences Guild 8, dedicated to the theme “Building East–West Bridges,” explored the common elements that unite pilgrimage traditions across different cultures and religions. During the group discussions, participants reflected on the pilgrimage experience and confirmed that, despite the diversity of destinations and faith traditions, pilgrimages share remarkable similarities. Whether the journey leads to Santiago de Compostela, Jerusalem, or Mecca, pilgrims undergo comparable stages of preparation, experience similar emotions along the way, and follow a journey that unfolds in much the same manner.
